Attracting More Customers with Multiplied Messaging
The words you use to describe your product, service, and business are one of the most powerful tools in your marketing arsenal. Words are powerful and we use them in literally every form of marketing we do, whether it’s social media posts, emails, blogs, or even when you talk to people about your business face to face. These words have the ability to give your business identity and personality. They have the opportunity to make people think about your business differently than they normally would. You can be playful, sarcastic, traditional, straightforward, whatever fits you and your customers. This helps you prevent your business from being a faceless blob. People want to do business with people, so give your business a personality!
So when you build out or update the marketing messaging you want to use for your business, a great practice to get into is to write the same thing you want to say 5 times. Now I get it, as a small business owner you don’t have time to write your marketing once, let alone twice, but hear me out. Writing it 5 times does a couple things for you.
Why Write Your Marketing Messaging 5 Times
Save Time
When you sit down to focus on a specific piece of your messaging, you will actually save time. This is because you are solving the issue instead of letting it take up space in your brain constantly. It takes time to get into this headspace, so you’re time blocking and doing that all at once instead of multiple times throughout a week or month. If you map out how to say one thing in your marketing messaging in five different ways, this allows you to keep things fresh and create 5 pieces of content instead of one.
Test Messages for Success
When you have five messages written instead of one, you now can use all of them and test to see which ones perform well. See which message people respond to, how they respond, and which ones work to create more sales or stronger customer relationships. Utilize your social media insights and Google Analytics or website data to track changes in number of clicks, comments, or time on page for each different type of message.
3. Discover New Angles
When you write out the same thing 5 times you will find new ways to say the same thing. Different phrases will resonate with different people in different ways. Now instead of appealing to one type of person, you’re appealing to 5! That instantly magnifies your messaging impact by finding words, phrases, and examples that cause people to connect with you in a new way.
4. Your Marketing Messaging Improves!
When you write out your message 5 times, you will challenge yourself each time to do better. You’ll start cutting and pasting and connecting ideas together you never have before and crafting messaging that is even better. By the time you write it 5 times, you’ll have your favorite pieces of each one and you can put the best parts of each together to make something truly great.
Revamp Messaging One Step at a Time
It’s a process when you start spending a little extra time on your messaging. Trying to re-write all of your messaging five times over all at once will be overwhelming, so instead, start in the most important places that get you the most impact for your time. These may include:
- the about page of your website
- your Instagram bio
- questions you answer frequently
- descriptions of your most popular products and services
Make It Fun and Engage Others in the Process
One fun way to implement this without taking all the creative responsibility on yourself is to find a group of people to do this exercise with. This is an amazing opportunity to involve your family in your business, or your employees, or even a group of fellow business owners to workshop each others messaging together.
To do this, choose one piece of content, like a welcome email for example, and have each person in your group re-write the content from their own personal perspective. Now you have that number of new ideas to use and test in your marketing!
